REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University Director of Athletics Tom Galbraith said the university will continue its varsity wrestling program heading into the 2017-18 season.

“We are committed to sponsoring the 12 varsity sports that are offered at Simpson,” Galbraith said. “We are excited to see wrestling continue as a sport for the Red Hawks.”

Simpson University hosted the NAIA West Regional Wrestling Championships in February, during which Simpson wrestlers qualified for the national tournament, including three-time All-American Austin Lobsinger. Galbraith said he received numerous messages of support for the program.

The wrestling program began at Simpson in the 2012-13 season. In addition to Lobsinger, the Red Hawks have three other wrestlers who earned All-America honors: A.J. Valles, Vicente Hernandez, and Brady Beamon. Former head coach Don Williams was inducted into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Simpson Athletics competes in baseball, softball, volleyball, wrestling; and men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, golf, and soccer.
